Recent Interview with Earth Songs
When did Earth Songs Flutists Arthur Kills Straight start playing flutes?
Well thats a question that will date me, Oh boy. I guess it was 1974 at the Worlds Fair in Spokane Washington. When I first picked up a flute. My brother and I was helpig a flute maker at the folk life section of the fair. When we finished helping him we were gifted each a flute. It was then that the flute first spoke to me in a strong way. Which since then has become a daily part of my life.
You say its a part of your life. How is that?
Back in 1979 while on a hilltop in a deep prayer state, I played my flute and discovered the strong healing power of the voice of spirit through the flute. So even today when things get to fast pace and I need to get grounded with Creator or the things around me. I go to my flutes for their natural healing power.
When did you start performing, and why?
I had always played at home and often at the end of a day. I guess it was 1994, it was my beautiful wife who encouraged me to share my music with others, that it was not right to not do so. Because of her insight, I have had so many blessing bestowed upon me through the sharing of the flute music with others. I have wittnessed the relaxing soothing healing power touch so many since then, which brings me many rewards inside.
So do you believe the Native American Flute is for all peoples? Oh, most defintely. Two of the oldest known instruments known to mankind are the drum and the flute. We all have a drum inside us. So what better way to accompany it than the flute. I believe the ancestors of long ago discovered its power of touching people in a good way, common to all peoples.
What is your reason or desire of Earth Songs new album "The Circle"?
Earth Songs music has always been an expression of earth bound spiritaulity, which we believe is a common thread to all peoples. The Circle album is not only an inward expression of us but an outward power of healing sound for all to experience. It is our hope that The Circle album brings a newness of awareness to those that hear it. In whch they carry it forward in their lifes in a good way.
How did you come up with the songs for The Circle album?
We have been really blessed to live in a remote wilderness area of North Idaho. So we have all this nature, all around us to experience and inspire us. Our way of life is to look at these things and discover meanings and insights into life. So we thought it would be helpful and good to pass these insightful songs of lessons learned. That others may enjoy and gain from them.
You refer to your music as songs, but are they not melodies?
Yes, you could call them melodies. But for us they are songs of spirit that come from with in and come forth outwardly for all to recieve ad benieft from them. They are spirits words on the wind.
What one thing would you say listeners of "The Circle" will get from it?
Thus far everyone says how relaxing and spirit felt the music is. So I would have to say a relaxing soothing experience, that helps to ground them once again, in this fast paced world we all live in.
Do you have future plans for further releases?
Oh most definitly, as the songs are given they will in turn be given back to the fans, supporters and family. It is through thier support and desire. That we continue to push forward in a positive way.
